Do I need advance DIY skills?
You will need to be a competent DIYer—particularly when setting out the base, interpreting plans, and making small adjustments on site.
What You Will Need to Provide
1. A Solid, Level Base
A garden room is only as good as its foundation. Before your kit arrives, you’ll need to prepare a flat, level base. Popular choices include:
- Our unique Pent Haus foundation system
-
Ground screws or timber frame base
-
Concrete pad / slab
-
Concrete pile / pedestal system
Building on an existing base? Our garden room kits include a base levelling system so your Pent Haus sits perfectly level.
2. What Tools Will I Need?
Our self-build kits are designed to be assembled using standard DIY tools that many homeowners already own.
✓ Post-crete (approximately 1.5 bags per post)
✓ Spirit level
✓ Spade and bucket
✓ Cordless drill / screwdriver
✓ Hammer
✓ Tape measure
✓ Ladder (for safe roof access)
✓ Handsaw
✓ Silicone gun
✓ Grinder or hacksaw
✓ Broom
✓ 30mm or 32mm hole saw (for electrical cable entry)
Useful, But Not Essential
These tools can help speed up installation but are not required.
✓ Jigsaw or circular saw
✓ Second-fix pin gun
✓ Laser level
3. Finishing touches
Once the weather-tight shell is erected, you can customise the interior to your exact taste:
-
Electrics & Plumbing: You will need a certified electrician to run main power from your house to the garden room and connect internal sockets/lights (plus a plumber if adding a sink or toilet).
-
Internal Lining: Plasterboard, plastering, or internal wall cladding.
-
Flooring & Decorating: Laminate, vinyl, or carpet flooring, plus paint for internal walls.
During the checkout page you will see a range of additional options which you can select with your garden room kit from our foundation pack, electrical pack to our internal panelling pack.

Can One Person Build A Garden Room?
Real builder spotlight: Q&A with a Pent Haus customer
We caught up with a recent self-builder to get his honest take on the build process:
Q: Why did you choose Pent Haus for your project?
“I chose Pent Haus as it was the design I’d been looking for and had good reviews.”
Q: Did you have any doubts before starting?
“The only doubts were getting the base right and being able to follow the plans.”
Q: How easy were the panels to work with, and how long did the main build take?
“Although the panels were heavy, they were fairly easy to put together. I liked the SIP panels because they fitted together easily, which meant it could be done quickly. It took around five working days to complete the outside, the windows, and the roof.”
Q: Did you build it entirely on your own?
“I did most of it myself, with some help from my wife and daughter lifting the roof panels, the corner panels, and the window frames.”
Q: What advice would you give to anyone planning their own self-build?
“Before you start, make sure the base is level and square. Follow the plans properly. You do need some basic DIY knowledge to adjust things with the right tools, and having someone to help with the construction and plans is essential.”
What if it starts raining while I’m building my garden room?
Rain won’t stop your build! We have successfully installed many Pent Haus garden rooms during rainy conditions. However, to ensure the best finish, it is essential to keep key timber components—such as floorboards, internal panelling, and MDF—as dry as possible. We strongly recommend having tarpaulins on hand to keep these materials covered whenever rain begins.
