While this model is not supplied with insulation or interior linings, it’s fully customisable—allowing you to add your own insultation, plasterboard, or panel systems at a later stage if desired. The ToughFrame gives you a reliable and economical starting point for creating your own functional garden building. A garden room structural shell, like the ToughFrame, is a high-quality, weather-tight exterior building supplied without internal finishes or insulation. Think of it as the “bones and skin” of your garden room.

It provides a professional-grade timber frame, a durable EPDM rubber roof, and maintenance-free exterior cladding. This “shell-only” approach is the most cost-effective way to get a premium-looking garden building while giving you the freedom to:

Save Money: Handle the internal boarding and floor finishes yourself.

Customise Insulation: Choose the exact thermal or acoustic insulation for your specific needs (e.g., for a home cinema or a year-round office).

Can I insulate the ToughFrame myself later?
How long does it take to build a ToughFrame kit?

On average, a ToughFrame garden room takes 4 to 5 days to fully assemble. Because the components are precision-engineered and supplied as a high-quality structural kit, the “heavy lifting” of the framing and weatherproofing is streamlined.

Please note that build times can vary slightly depending on your DIY experience and the size of the building (we offer 15 different size configurations). Once the shell is complete, you can take your time with the internal insulation and finishes at your own pace!
What planning permission is needed for a ToughFrame garden room?

In most cases, a ToughFrame garden room falls under Permitted Development rules and does not require planning permission. Because our buildings are designed with a height of under 2.5m, they can typically be placed anywhere in your garden (as long as they don’t take up more than 50% of your total land). However, certain conditions apply if you live in a Listed Building, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), or if you plan to use the room for overnight sleeping.

What foundation do I need for a ToughFrame?
The ToughFrame is designed for versatility and can be installed on several types of surfaces: 

Our Unique Foundation Pack: For the easiest installation on a wide variety of ground types including slopes, the ToughFrame is fully compatible with our Unique Foundation Pack. This system eliminates the need for heavy concrete excavations and provides a level, ventilated base.

Existing Concrete or Patios: If you already have a flat, solid surface like a concrete slab or a hard-standing base, you can install the ToughFrame directly onto it using our Base Levelling Kit. This ensures your frame remains structurally sound and perfectly square, preventing issues with door and window alignment later.

Existing Decking: ToughFrame can also be installed directly onto existing or new decking again using our base levelling kit. Our only requirement is that the underlying framework is still structurally sound so we can guarantee a long-lasting finish
