Can You Use A Garden Room All Year Round?
It’s a question we get asked a lot – can you use a garden room all year round? After all, you want to make sure that your investment is going to be worth it, especially if you’re opting to use your garden room every day as an office or studio.
The fantastic news is that the answer is a resounding yes! With careful consideration around insulation, heaters, ventilation and glazing, you can definitely have an all-season garden room that’s available for use 365 days of the year.
Summer: making the most of the light – without overheating
Ensuring your garden room can be used on hot days is a must, especially with climate change elevating UK summer temperatures. This is where you need to consider glazing, shading options and air flow around the room to avoid your garden room becoming a large greenhouse that’s too hot to enjoy properly.
Some thoughtful design touches will really make a difference. Think about the position of your windows – ensure there’s a cross-ventilation so hot air can escape, and if possible, make them north rather than south facing. If they are south facing, consider adding a roof overhang, canopy or larch batten sunshades. For solar control, blinds or curtains will help block out the sun on super hot days. Reflective solar film is also an option.
Managing moisture levels is key. This is particularly important if you’re using your garden room as a gym or exercise space, or plan to install a bathroom. Ensure your garden room includes trickle vents on windows and/or doors and if this isn’t enough to control moisture levels, you might want to consider a fan, either a simple extractor fan or a single room heat recovery fan that helps with temperature levels. A dehumidifier is also an option.
Also, that insulation you added to your garden room so you can use it in the winter? It will also help external heat from coming in, making it more bearable on super hot days.
Winter: the real test of insulation and heating
Winter is the season when your garden room is really put to the test – after all, no one wants to be shivering while working, or unable to access the room for three months of the year.
So, are garden rooms warm in winter? The answer lies in heating and insulation – without these, your garden room just turns into a glorified shed!
The good news is that garden rooms come with a variety of heating options. Electric radiators are always a popular choice, with a wall-mounted version offering neatness and preserving precious floor space.
Another option is an infrared panel heater. Rather than heating the air, this radiates warmth directly to people and objects. The advantage for a garden room is that infrared panel heaters don’t take up much space, can be easily controlled and work well in a small area. You can mount them on the ceiling, too, which also helps free up floor and wall space. Or for the ultimate in luxury, you could consider underfloor heating.
Any type of heating needs to be considered when designing your garden room, and ensuring that the right electrics have been installed to support it.
Working in tandem with your heater is the need to have proper insulation, to keep that precious heat inside the garden room. And insulation isn’t just for the walls – don’t forget to include the ceiling and the floor. The added bonus is that decent insulation will help with moisture levels too, which will play a big part in preserving the fabric of your garden room.
Decent glazing is also important to keep heat inside. Double or triple glazing will ensure heat stays where it needs to be, rather than leaking through the glass.
Spring and Autumn: weather proofing and ventilation
The shoulder seasons of Spring and Autumn can also bring their challenges for garden rooms. Sunshine and rain require ventilation management, which is where those trickle vents come into play.
As the cooler weather and autumnal rains come in, making sure the outside is properly weather proofed will help your garden room maintain its appearance as well as being warm and dry inside. Depending on the material of your garden room panels, you may need to weatherproof it each year with an oil or a stain, or opt for a material that’s resistant to heat and water, such as the ToughWoodⓇ that Pent Haus garden rooms are clad in.
What To Look For When Choosing A Year-Round Garden Room
Insulation rating
Insulation will help keep your garden room warm in winter as well as cool in summer, so it’s vital your year-round garden room has it. Check the specification of the insulation and whether it’s enough for the temperature range you experience.
Glazing specification
The thickness of your windows and doors will play an important part in helping use your garden room year round. We advise double glazing as a minimum to ensure heat is retained, with the added bonus that it will block out any external sounds such as traffic.
Heating
Heating is a must in the UK climate if you want to use your garden room year-round. You’ll therefore need to make sure you put in the right electrics to support the type of heating you want, as well as everything else you need power for. Our Garden Rooms Electric Guide has lots of practical information on everything you need to know about installing electrics.
Roofing
You’ll need to make sure the roof on your garden room can cope with all the rain the UK climate throws at it! Think about the pitch, the materials and the drainage.
Warranty
Check whether your garden room comes with a warranty to cover any damage to the fabric of the building, whether this is from the weather or any other wear and tear.
